Un exemplaire en bronze de la Danaïde
13/7/04 - Question Chyrl Corrigan:
I found your e-mail address on the www.jamespradier.com website, to which I was referred by Nidal Ouaiss from the Galerie Atena in Paris. Unfortunately, I do not speak or read French so I cannot read what is on the website. I am trying to gather information about a sculpture. I have attached pictures of it, including a picture of the stamp « PRADIER 1852 » near the base of the sculpture. It looks like a bronze, maybe 45 cm tall. I know that it was acquired about 50 or 60 years ago, in the western New York, United States area. I have been searching through sites that include the works of James Pradier, and cannot find mention of one that resembles this one. Is there another Pradier that was a sculpture at this time? Could this be a work by James Pradier who lived from 1790-1852? I would appreciate any information you could provide for me, or any other contacts that I may use. Thank you for your time.

Thanks very much for your e-mail and I am very pleased to see such a fine example of James Pradier's Danaïde. Judging from what you say, you only know it from pictures. Can you tell me where it is and perhaps put me in touch with the owner? It is a well-known work. The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire in Geneva has a plaster model, 48 cm. high, signed and dated « J. Pradier 1852 » (unlike the example you have found, the signature includes the initial « J »). You will find images of this model along with an analysis of the work in the Statues de chair exhibition catalogue, pp. 176-178. A similar model belonging to a private collection is pictured below. Other examples can be seen on the present website in the Ventes section under Ventes aux enchères 2003 (Auctions 2003).
