CASTING HISTORY. THORVALDSEN'S CAST COLLECTION REVISITED

Plaster figures of masterpieces from Classical Antiquity and a fascinating insight into an enthusiastic collector’s universe – this is what awaits visitors to the exhibition “Casting History. Thorvaldsen’s Cast Collection revisited”, which will be on view in Thorvaldsens Museum from 24 March

For the first time since the 1960s, this exhibition will provide the possibility of experiencing the whole of Thorvaldsen’s unique private collection of plaster casts after the art of Classical Antiquity. Here are plaster casts in all shapes and sizes, which Thorvaldsen acquired over the 40 years he lived and worked in Rome. He was a keen collector throughout his life, and in Rome – in those days the artistic centre of Europe – he had ample opportunity to acquire art of a high quality. His collection was widely known, and his home is said to have been crammed full of works of art – including a large number of casts representing an important source of inspiration for his own art.

The exhibition “Casting History. Thorvaldsen’s Cast Collection revisited” attempts to recreate the very experience it is to step into a private collector’s universe. The casts are presented with the orderly lack of an overall view and the lack of chronology that are characteristic of many a private collection. As visitor to the exhibition, you are given access to a storehouse of surprises and sense impressions.

The exhibition also provides evidence of the importance attached to the masterpieces of Classical Antiquity in training artists at the time of Thorvaldsen. In the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where Thorvaldsen was a student in the 1780s, the casts were used in teaching to illustrate the great art that an artist should strive to emulate. This Thorvaldsen did in Rome, where he was surrounded by the art and ideals of Antiquity. Clear examples of the influence of Classical art on Thorvaldsen can be seen in the exhibition “Thorvaldsen and Antiquity”, which opens at the same time as the above exhibition and can be seen in direct continuation of it. By juxtaposing a range of Thorvaldsen’s own works and selected works from the collection of casts, we throw light on three central aspects of Thorvaldsen’s approach to Antiquity: copy, restoration and inspiration.

The exhibition “Casting History” has been arranged by Stig Miss, the Director of Thorvaldsens Museum, and the Thorvaldsens Museum curator Torben Melander in collaboration with the architects Alexander H. Damsbo and Henrik Ingemann Nielsen, who also participated in the structure of the Museum’s prize-winning exhibition “Fatigue. Danish Sculpture 1850-1900” in 2002. It is moreover Thorvaldsens Museum’s contribution to the celebrations on the occasion of the 250th anniversary this year of the founding of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. The Museum’s services for schools can offer a series of educational events on this subject during the period of the exhibition. The exhibition “Thorvaldsen and Antiquity” is arranged by the Museum’s curator Margrethe Floryan.

The collections of Thorvaldsens Museum primarily comprise Thorvaldsen´s own sculptures and his drawings and sketch models for these. Nearly all the sculptures he made are found in the museum, often as original plaster models. Plaster being the material for the casting of the sculptures, before they were made out of marble for purchasers from the entire Europe.

Thorvaldsens Museum also contains a large collection of paintings made by contemporary European and Danish artists, and collections of antique Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman objects of art.

24. marts 2004 - 13. februar 2005
